The premier medical authorityfor children,American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), has reinforced their strong recommendation for breastfeeding. In a policy statement released today, the AAP states that breastmilk should be an infants only food for the first six months of life.
The American Academy of Pediatrics reaffirms itsrecommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for about 6 months, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, with continuation of breastfeeding for 1 year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant. Medical contraindications breastfeeding are rare.

Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and House Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) have introduced the Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2011. The Breastfeeding Promotion Act expands the law requiring reasonable space and time to pump during the workday for to include salaried workers.
